Minister Commends METGE’s Community-Led Climate Action at Mbale Trade Exhibition

Mbale, Uganda – The Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Sanjay Tanna, has commended Mount Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise (METGE) for its outstanding contribution to environmental conservation and community-led climate action during the Mbale Trade Exhibition organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives in partnership with Mbale traders and private sector stakeholders.

The exhibition brought together government institutions, businesses, development partners, civil society organizations, and members of the public to showcase innovations and initiatives that are driving sustainable economic growth. For METGE, the event provided an important platform to demonstrate how tree growing is restoring degraded landscapes, strengthening climate resilience, and improving livelihoods across the Mount Elgon region.

At the METGE exhibition stall, visitors explored the organization’s integrated approach to climate change mitigation through community-led tree growing and sustainable livelihood interventions. The displays highlighted the establishment and management of community tree nurseries, the production and distribution of millions of quality tree seedlings, restoration of degraded landscapes within and around Mount Elgon National Park, promotion of agroforestry, bamboo restoration along degraded riverbanks, and climate-smart livelihood initiatives such as beekeeping and energy-saving technologies.

“Our participation was not only about showcasing our achievements but also about inspiring more people to become active participants in restoring the environment. Every conversation at the exhibition was an opportunity to encourage collective action for a greener and more resilient Mount Elgon,” said Micheal Sunday, Programme Manager.

A major highlight of the exhibition was the Minister’s visit to the METGE exhibition stall, where he was taken through the organization’s work in supporting community-managed tree nurseries, promoting agroforestry, restoring degraded ecosystems, and empowering farming households through nature-based livelihood opportunities.

Hon. Tanna praised METGE for its continued commitment to environmental restoration and recognized the organization’s role in supporting Uganda’s climate action agenda through community-driven initiatives. He emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between government institutions, local communities, the private sector, and development partners to scale up sustainable environmental conservation and development efforts.
