In a bid to rejuvenate the lush greenery and combat environmental degradation, the
Mount Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise (METGE) has launched two more nurseries in
the districts of Manafwa and Sironko. This initiative has ignited a sense of enthusiasm
and hope within the local communities. The two nurseries will produce annually
450,000 seedlings for distribution.
Bunabutsale Super Nursery in Bumashele village, in Manafwa District and BudadiriNursery site in Sironko will each produce 300,000 and 150,000 seedlings, respectively. This will herald a new era of tree growing and greening of the region.
The nursery at Bunabutsale, will reach out to neighboring subcounties Kato, Buweswa, and parts of Bududa sub-county. With the backdrop of perennial flooding by River Manafwa, which serves as a vital water source; the initiative holds promise in restoring areas ravaged by mudslides and landslides in Bunabutsale. Notably, the inclusion of bamboo in the restoration efforts underscores a strategic approach towards conserving and revitalizing the river ecosystem.
\”This initiative is not merely about planting trees; it\’s about nurturing a sense of responsibility towards our environment and securing a sustainable future for generations to come,\” remarked Simon Wayaka, the cluster Manager.
\”Our aim is to not only meet the existing demand but also to surpass it, ensuring that every sapling finds its rightful place in nurturing the environment,\” emphasized
Mr. Abubakali Maale.
Mr, Eric Mwasame, The Parish Chief of Bunabutsale says the initiative of bamboo planting will reduce on flooding and environmental degradation. “Because of rains, the river banks had become weak, and therefore through the tree growing initiative, we shall have our river back and recover our forests”
Therefore, the palpable excitement within the communities served by these two nurseries speaks volumes about the collective commitment towards environmental conservation. With an anticipated impact reaching over 1,000 individuals, METGE is not just sowing seeds; it\’s sowing seeds of Hope, resilience, and a greener tomorrow.
