With support from Admiral ,Mount Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise (METGE) has supported four community groups in Kinyofu and Gabugoto parishes, Masira Subcounty, with beehives under a livelihood-centered conservation approach.

This support directly links community livelihoods to the protection of the park. Beekeeping offers a sustainable source of income that does not require clearing trees or extracting resources from protected areas. By earning a living through activities that coexist with the forest, community members are less likely to engage in illegal logging or encroachment, reducing pressure on the park’s ecosystems.
As a result, members of these community groups are taking a leading role in tree planting, restoration activities, and long-term stewardship of the park. With improved understanding of conservation and access to alternative livelihoods, communities are increasingly becoming active partners in protecting biodiversity rather than drivers of environmental degradation.
In addition, with support from Admiral, METGE is restoring 44 hectares of a degraded strip within the park under the Tree Planting for Improved Livelihoods (TPIL) Project. This work contributes to biodiversity recovery, strengthens climate resilience, and improves household incomes through nature-based enterprises such as beekeeping.
This initiative builds on METGE’s earlier successes, where 108 hectares were restored in Ganzo and Mayiyi parishes in Bulambuli District.
