About Us

METGE is a 'not for profit' organisation, registered and based in Uganda with its operations mainly restricted  to the Elgon sub-region in the districts of Bududa, Manafwa, Sironko, Namisindwa, Bulambuli, Mbale and Bukedea.  

​IN 2019
The programme celebrated the distribution of 10 million tree seedlings.

TO DATE
The programme has distributed  21 million tree seedlings and counting cumulatively in the Elgon sub-region.

TARGET
By 2025 the programme will distribute  25 million tree seedlings.

OUTREACH
Approximately 54,000  beneficiaries have benefited from the project. 

Directors

The METGE Board is a mix of experienced managers, finance professionals, and agricultural specialists with experience in the public and private sector. We share a passion for taking action to minimise the harmful effects of climate change in Uganda, for sustainable development and local communities. And of course - trees!

Dr Mary N. G. Manana

Chair

Dr Mary holds a Master of Philosophy in Environmental studies (Economics) and currently holds a PHD in  (sustainability and livelihoods). She also has an MA in Organizational Leadership and Management, and a Bachelor of Education degree specializing in Economics/Business and Accounting. Mary has been administrator with over 20 years’ experience in the university sector and is a trained and experienced business mentor, counsellor and a certified trainer of trainers. ​ Mary is a great believer in conservation having recently done extensive research in community led livelihood improvement that looks into a place centered consideration on environment, culture, economics and the social status of the community.

Robert Arnold

Director

Bob has worked in skills training and development in Kenya, Sudan as well as in Uganda for more than 20 years. Bob’s mantra is ‘helping people to help themselves’ and he is passionate about empowering and enabling individuals and communities to work to become self-reliant.  Bob has been involved with the Mbale Tree Planting Project (TPP) since its inception in 2010. Bob’s first-hand involvement of having a tree nursery at Bungokho Rural Development Centre (BRDC) in a previous role is invaluable experience in supporting and driving the long term aims of the organisation.

Angelina Achieng Olowo Barungi

Director

 Mr  Akudo holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Agriculture from Makerere University. He has a training in Rice Establishment Technology and Irrigation from Egypt. He has a certificate in Project Management from Uganda Management Institute. He was a field Officer who later was promoted to supervisory level and has relevant knowledge experience both at field and supervisory levels. He also worked a subject matter specialist for the European Union Funded Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) Project where he was Focal Point Officer for Kiboga District. He has all the necessary knowledge and skills on Climate Smart Agriculture, Agro Forestry and Wood Lot Production. He has helped in the establishment of a number of tree seed nurseries at the district. He has participated in the implementation of Government Programmes such the National Agriculture Advisory Services (NAADs), Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), Green Charcoal Project and Control of Banana Bacterial Wilt. Currently he is a board member at METGE.

Angelina Achieng Olowo Barungi

Director

Angelina is a people centered and fun-loving person who is thrilled by transforming livelihoods of the disadvantaged. As Board Member of METGE, she is overly excited to contribute to the restoration and preservation of the environment through tree growing in Eastern Uganda. She is a multi skilled professional with over 20 years of experience in matters of customs tax policy, international trade policy, cross border trade, trade facilitation, EAC regional integration, public administration and law. She is a holder of a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science from Makerere University.
