30 Butta Residents graduate as certified Lorena Stove Construction Trainers
In an extraordinary achievement, 30 women from Butta , Manafwa District, have successfully completed an intensive six-week training program focused on Lorena stove construction and installation. This significant milestone not only signifies the acquisition of valuable skills in eco-friendly stove construction, but also certifies them as Trainees of Trainers (TOT), promising a widespread positive impact throughout the community on Lorena stoves.
The Lorena stove, renowned for its efficiency and minimal environmental footprint, has emerged as a cornerstone for fuel wood savings and slowing down deforestation. Crafted primarily from locally available materials clay, bricks, sand, and sawdust; this stove features a two-pot rest design with an efficient oven chamber and a flue that enhances its efficiency while reducing smoke accumulation within the kitchen, thus creating a healthier living environment.
Compared to the traditional three-stone stoves commonly used by locals, the Lorena stove consumes significantly less firewood, operates faster, ensures safety, and retains heat for extended periods.
Under the guidance of seasoned experts, the comprehensive training program covered various aspects of stove construction. This included safety protocols, and the socio-economic beneprotocols,and the socio-economic benefits of promoting clean cooking solutions.
The graduation ceremony, held on January 31st, 2024, at a local community center in Butta, was attended by local residents and community leaders. Certificates were awarded to the gradients by Mr. Alex Harris, a spatial analyst from the Welsh government.
Expressing enthusiasm about the program’s impact, Mr. Simon Wayaka, a cluster manager, emphasized the graduates’ dual accomplishment of acquiring stove construction skills and demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. As Trainees of
Trainers, they are now poised to share their knowledge and contribute to the wider adoption of eco-friendly cooking solutions in the community.
