METGE Celebrates 25 Million Trees Milestone in Mount Elgon Region

Mount Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise (METGE) has celebrated a historic milestone of raising, distributing, and planting 25 million trees since 2010 across the Mount Elgon landscape and Bukedea District. This marked a major milestone in its mission to restore degraded ecosystems and build community resilience to climate change.

The celebration brought together officials from the Welsh Government, Size of Wales, the METGE Board of Directors, government representatives, development partners, district leaders, and local communities to recognize the transformative impact of tree-growing efforts spearheaded by METGE.

The raising, distribution, and planting of trees were made possible through the generous support of the Welsh Government, through Size of Wales.

Since its inception, METGE has worked closely with implementing partners, communities, schools, and institutions to promote tree planting for environmental restoration, soil conservation, and livelihood improvement. The 25 million trees milestone stands as a testament to years of dedication, collaboration, and community ownership of the restoration process.

As part of the celebrations, METGE organized a marathon and walking campaign aimed at raising awareness about climate change and the importance of environmental conservation. The event featured 5 km, 10 km, and 15 km races, alongside a walking campaign that attracted enthusiastic participation from partners, students, and local community members.

The celebrations continued with a vibrant band performance held at the Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mbale Campus grounds, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. Later in the day, guests convened for a luncheon stakeholder meeting at Mount Elgon Hotel, where reflections were shared on the journey, challenges, and future aspirations of METGE’s restoration efforts.

Speaking at the celebration, Dr. Mary Manana, Chairperson of the METGE Board of Directors, expressed gratitude to partners and communities for their unwavering support and commitment.

“This milestone is a true reflection of the power of collective action. Each tree planted brings us closer to a greener, healthier, and more resilient Mount Elgon region. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Welsh Government and Size of Wales, our funders, for making this achievement possible,” she said.

The event also featured exhibitions showcasing METGE’s community-led interventions — from agroforestry and beekeeping to Lorena stove construction and gender inclusion initiatives that empower women and youth as key drivers of environmental stewardship.
